San Francisco · 2009.0107
IA Interior Architects has promoted three employees to principal: Richelle E. Allen of the Chicago, Illinois, office; Mark Forth of the Boston, Massachusetts, office; and Aaron Wong of the San Francisco, California, office.

Joliet · 2009.0107
Ground was recently broken in Joliet, Illinois, for the $400 million replacement hospital for Silver Cross Hospital. Designed and master planned by the Chicago office of RTKL, the 560,000-square-foot (52,00-square-meter) facility will include 289 all-private rooms and 11 operating rooms.

The project was planned to accommodate future growth. The six-story tower was designed to support the addition of two floors without disruption to ongoing operations. Patient rooms will be arrayed according to a distributed-nursing model, and will all be convertible into intensive care unit (ICU)-capable rooms. Included technology infrastructure will facilitate future conversion to fully electronic charting.

Completion is expected in fall 2011. RTKL is providing comprehensive architecture, interiors, medical equipment planning, and special systems design services. Vice president Alan C. Wilson, AIA, ACHA, is serving as principal-in-charge.

San Francisco · 2009.0106
Mark Herman, LEED AP, has joined Cannon Design as a principal and corporate commercial practice leader. Herman has over 20 years of experience in design and delivery of corporate, manufacturing, and healthcare projects. His current assignment includes the management, expansion, and relocation of the firm's San Francisco, California, offices. Herman previously served as a principal at the San Francisco office of NBBJ.

In the Buffalo, New York, office of Cannon Design, Lynne Deninger, AIA, LEED AP, was recently promoted to associate principal. With 22 years of experience, Deninger serves as the firm's the regional higher education practice leader for New England. She joined the firm in 2006.

Santa Monica · 2008.1231
The Santa Monica, California, office of Gensler has promoted Irwin Miller, Eric Stultz, and Jim Young to principal. Miller is a design director and leader in Gensler's retail and entertainment projects. Stultz is a design director for the firm's buildings and campuses studio. Young is the southwest regional design director.

Seaside · 2008.1228
The new Tanimura & Antle Family Memorial Library recently opened on the campus of California State University, Monterey Bay in Seaside, California. A multistory glass atrium with an arched roof defines the 136,000-square-foot (12,600-square-meter) library, designed by EHDD Architecture of San Francisco.

The initial shelving capacity is 152,000 volumes, with a potential capacity of 573,000. The library also contains three classrooms, two auditoriums, ten group study rooms, gallery spaces, offices, and a cafe. The upper floors provide views of the Monterey Peninsula and Salinas Valley. Sustainable features include daylighting, rooftop rainwater collection for irrigation, and underground stormwater storage and release. CSU Monterey Bay is located on the site of the former Fort Ord Army base.

Camden · 2008.1211
A new 90-bed facility (rendered above) recently opened at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, New Jersey. The Pavilion was designed by Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-based EwingCole to embrace patient-centered design concepts promoted by the nonprofit organization Planetree.

The exterior of the urban ten-story facility features glass with metal panel accents. A new pocket park offers public space where a garage previously stood.

The project comprises 298,000 square feet (27,700 square meters) of new construction and 79,000 square feet (7,300 square meters) of renovated space, with an expanded emergency room, 12 new operating rooms, a new intensive care unit (ICU), clinical labs, and visitor amenities, with room for future expansion.

The two-story main lobby was conceived of as a healing garden, with bamboo, natural materials, and daylighting. The atrium features a public cafe, gathering space for community events, retail store for patients and visitors, healthcare information center, and meditation room. Patient rooms feature access to daylight, window views of the Delaware River, family areas for overnight stays, and healthcare-specific carpeting.
